The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, taking devotees to four holy shrines in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your yatra.
The Four Sacred Dhams
Yamunotri — the source of the River Yamuna, reached by a 6km trek from Janki Chatti. Gangotri — the origin of the River Ganga, accessible by road. Kedarnath — a majestic Shiva temple requiring a 16km trek (or helicopter). Badrinath — a Vishnu temple at 3,133 meters, the most accessible of the four.
Best Time for Char Dham Yatra
The yatra season typically runs from late April/May to November, with the exact dates determined by the Hindu calendar. The best months are May-June and September-October. Avoid the July-August monsoon period due to landslide risks.
Registration & Preparation
Since 2022, registration is mandatory through the official Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra portal. Carry a medical fitness certificate, warm clothing, comfortable trekking shoes, and rain gear. Basic fitness is necessary, especially for the Kedarnath trek.
